What is the difference

For general public digital and electronic signatures are equivalent. The adjacency of the terms is such that digital signatures are considered an implementation of electronic signatures.

What is an electronic signature?

As ESIGN Act states, it is “an electronic sound, symbol, or process, attached to or logically associated with a contract or other record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record”. Thus, pretty much any electronic manifestation of consent can be an eSignature.

They don’t possess any security characteristics that could protect them from being copied of tampered with. But neither does your ink signature, which makes them quite similar in effects.

What is a digital signature software?

Digital signatures, though, are a whole different story. Their very nature is about protection. This protection is guaranteed on two levels. Level one involves a third-party observer, a certificate authority (CA) who controls issuance of digital certificates. Such certificate confirms a signer’s identity and binds him or her to what’s being signed. On level two, certificates issued by a CA are used to encrypt the signed document to ensure the signature doesn’t get forged on its way to another involved party.
